Furry Critters Blog

by @ 10:08 am. Filed under My Blog

I have set up this blog to post about my animals and as a support for those in need of help. I have been looking after animals for about 15 years, I started off rescuing cats. My speciality was hand feeding kittens that had no mum. I had quite a few litters and didnt loose one kitten in all the years I was doing it.

About 6 years ago, I got into breeding Hamsters, I bred 4 species, the Syrian Hamster, Winter White Hamster, Chinese Hamster and Roborovski Hamster, and won Grand Challenge at shows for my dwarfs. I Stopped breeding and decided to just keep different species as pets, and have had quite a few different species, from Multimammates, Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, Rats, Lemmings, Persian Jirds, Gunthers Voles, and now I keep about 5 different species of snakes. This is an extension of the Furry Critters forum and website.

You may have been directed here from other websites, and it might have been for specific reasons. You might want to look in the right of the page at the Bookmark links, which will redirect you to whatever subject you are looking for. If you find anything helpful or interesting, please leave a comment, or even a trackback, you will find the trackback link underneath each message, just above the comments box.

We have an information section found here where you can find information about many different animals including rats and hamsters, plus we have a forum found here where you can talk about your pets and get help if needed. We are a small friendly group of people with quite a variety of experience of different species of animals and are always willing to help when needed. Why not come and join the group, its free to join.

We have some exciting changes happening to the forum this weekend, it is going to be updated to phpbb3. I have been looking forward to this for ages, and it has come just at the right time.

The updates are going to happen on Sunday evening, 4pm CET USA which is 10pm UK time.

The forum will be offline for about 6 hours, and will be back live as soon as possible. Not all the changes will be made at the same time, but we aim to have the forum up and running so people can post.

The forum address is…..

http://www.hamstercareforum.co.uk/phpbb/index.php

Once its up and running, hope to see more people joining, and telling us about their pets.

Two new little Girly Guinea Pigs……

by @ 4:46 pm. Tags: , , ,

I ws on a website yesterday, and saw these little girlies up for adoption, and fell in love with them. I went to collect them last night, and they are sooo cute. The brown one is quite laid back, but the black one is a little bit fiesty and nips now and again. She has nipped me twice, but not hard enough to break the skin. I dont know what breed they are, so if anybody knows, could they please let me know too?

I got them to go with my little boys, for company. The boys just like each other, so hopefully they will be able to have company now.

This is Hippy, my Norwegian Forest Cat

by @ 11:17 am. Filed under My Blog

I got this little girl when she was about 4 months old, and she was totally ferule, she came with her brother who is a huge long haired ginger and white cat. he’s about 3 times bigger than she is, which is the norm for this breed. She’s now around 6 or 7 and is just able to tollerate being petted, but only on her terms. I had to totally ignore her in the end, as nothing else was working, and with all my other cats, she sat watching them being pettend and one day she just came and nudged my arm. I still cant show more than one hand anywhere near her, or she runs away, but she’s getting there.

Myra is the youngest, and the maddest. She is just such a funny cat. Small, but big in personality. She’d take on anything. lol. She sleeps on my chest, and in my arms like a baby, but she preferes to sleep on the sky box, next to the tv.

This is Misty my oldest, she has some problems with her eyesight

by @ 11:17 am. Filed under My Blog

Posted by ShoZu

Misty is my oldest cat, and had Toxo when she was younger. She was seriously ill with it, when she was about 7 weeks old, I hand reared her, and her litter mates as her mum abandoned them. The retina of both eyes is coming away. She gets on fine though, and she even manages to catch flies, but has major problems with spacial awareness. If she gets chased by one of the other cats, if there’s been something put in the room, she’s not used to, she will bump into it, or if she tries to jump up on something she’s not used to she doesnt get it right. All are indoor cats.

Having one of those days today…..

by @ 1:45 pm. Filed under My Blog

Been cleaning out the animals, its taking me forever. I have an amazing cage for the rats, its huge, but it so hard to clean. I cant remove the shelves, because my arms arent long enough, so I have to clean them when they are in the cage.

The animals are doing ok though, the males are enormous, the females still arent that big, but are doing fine.

My Hairless Rat Adventure

by @ 2:52 pm. Filed under My Blog

I never set out to get a hairless rat. I have always said I prefer my pets furry. I had, however been looking for some Dumbo rats. When two young Dumbos were dumped at my local pet store by an owner who couldn’t keep them, I had a look. One was a lovely furry girl. I’m hopeless with color names, but she is kind of a pale tan with black eyes. fuzzBut her pal was a hairless. Pinky, when I first met her, had a small bite wound on her back, just above the base of the tail. After several weeks of having Neosporin rubbed on regularly by pet store employees, her entire backside was chewed raw. And I was ready to buy at least the furry rat. But I felt sorry for poor naked Pinky and didn’t want to leave her alone. While I suspected the original bite wound was from her cagemate, I thought if I put them in a large enough cage with plenty of food, they might get along better.pinky

When I first brought them home, Pinky lookd like one of those starving orphans rom a poor country, big head, body that looks like a skeletonwith skin stretched over it. She ate like two rats. No wonder their bowl was always empty at the store. The scuffles between Pinky and her cagemate, who I named Fuzz, got to a point I finally put them in seperate cages. Pinky’s “wound” almost healed, then all by herself she chewed it up again. I’ve been using a mild herbal soothing cream on it. It is almst healed again. I suspect I shuld keep it moisterized until the scar tissue stops bothering her. I wonder if hairless rats just have more skin problems.

You can kind of see her wound

You can kind of see her wound

Okay. It’s been nearly three months since Pinky came home to live with me. While I still think I prefer furry animals, she’s such a little character, I’ve grown to love her. She climbs up my leg to sit in my lap. But not for long before she’s up my shirt to my shoulder, tickling my neck and ear with her curly whiskers. Her wound almost heals, then she picks at it again. I’m wondering if she’ll always have some skin problems. But it’s better and we’re working on it. And it certainly doesn’t seem to bother her much.
